"The Future speaks waterless!"
On 6 and 7 October the 3rd International EWPA user’s forum took place at KBA in Radebeul.
It was organized by professionals for professionals. Reports on experience and use of waterless offset printing throughout Europe were read as well as information from manufacturers about the necessary periphery.
Speakers-Ninepins on 5 October 2005
To get in contact with each other the speakers started with playing at ninepins during the evening of 5 October.
It was a come together of manufacturers, technical press and printers with a really nice atmosphere. Two teams absolved several games and enjoyed talking frankly about technical items and every-day topics.
That’s why this event went on until the early morning.
The Usersforum on 6 October 2005
At 8.30 am the bus left the hotel heading to KBA at Radebeul where the user’s forum started at 9.30 am.
The ladies program which took place at the same time included a visit at Meißener Porcelain Works and many other nice things.
Mr. Klaus Schmidt – Managing Director KBA – opened the user’s forum.

Report on thermo exposures at a Drent-Goebel-WL-UV-rotary-label-press and WLO-UV production foils
Topic: WLO-UV-printing and with air and water
Expert: RKJ company - Mr. Ralf Klee, Print & Consultancy – Mr. Braun
Mr. Klee provided us with an interesting report and an excellent presentation with takes of thermo exposures.
Report on experiences with Rapida 74 G
Topic: Rapida 74 G
Expert: Pinguin Druck - Berlin, Mr. Alexander Mende
Mr. Mende introduced his company and reported on the experiences and problems in waterless offset printing on a Rapida 74 G.
In his opinion the plate and ink industry should have more progress in this field of printing.
Forum / report on 1st Cortina user Rodie
Topic: WLO in paper press – Coldset
Leader: Mr. Thomas Fasold
Experts: Rodie company – Mr. Jan Hofsink, KBA – Mr. Peter Benz and Mr. Klaus Schmidt
Mr. Fasold (Print & Production) presented the forum and explained the procedure of the forum regarding KBA Cortina.
At the beginning Mr. Schmidt talked about the history of paper press and the importance of it for KBA.
Hereafter Mr. Benz presented the Cortina with the help of video takes and pointed out technical details like handling of plates and construction.
As Rodie company uses this machine since Spring 2005 he was able to give a practical insight into every-day use.
This caused interesting discussions among the auditors.
Report on anilox rollers
Topic: Anilox roller – the unknown roller
Expert: Praxair, Switzerland – Mr. Uwe Neis
An interesting report by Mr. Neis who helped increasing the popularity of anilox rollers.
Report of a WLO-UV-sheet fed offset printing user
Topic: HD-Printmaster in WL-UV-printing
Expert: Hermann company, Sonnenbuehl – Mr. Hermann
Mr. Hermann introduced his company and explained his idea of printing waterless on a HD-Printmaster.
He stated that there are too less specimen copies for customers which demonstrate the advantages of waterless printing, which printing materials can be used and what kind of products can be distributed by this niche.
He presented his own specimen as well as a WLO-compendium which can be ordered at Hermann company.
Report Tresu, temperature control on MAN Roland 700
Topic: Temperature control in WLO-printing
Expert: Tresu company, Mr. Henrik Christiansen
Tresu company, known for their competence in distribution temperature control presented a concept of temperature control of rollers in WLO-printing.
Report on WLO-UV-printing 4/4 on KBA WLO-105
Topic: WLO-UV-printing on KBA WLO-105
Expert: DZE company, Essen – Mr. Jörg Klapp, fallen ill
Mr. Detlef Braun gave a short report on this topic and excused Mr. Klapp who was not able to participate.
Report printing trades association
Topic: IPA, ER-WLO-Certification, UV-compendium
Expert: Trades association Wiesbaden, Dr. Bernhard Küter in German: Berufsgenossenschaft Druck & Papier
Dr. Küter pointed out the economical and ecological advantages of waterless offset printing.
He informed about the emission data in wet offset and gave a hint on coming changes in law concerning this topic.

The possibility of discussing every single report led to intensive talks.
Everybody talked frankly about problems of manufacturers of printing machines, plates and ink.
Evening-Event on 6 October 2005
A Mexican Night (motto “Hot & Spicy”) arranged by KBA took place at Carola Castle in Dresden.
The visitors enjoyed the several Mexican specialties and three Mexican musicians helped to make it a special event for all participants.
KBA OpenHouse on 7 October 2005
The Open House started at 10 am.
Mr. Klaus Schmidt and Mr. Jürgen Veil inaugurated this day, many experts with different reports followed.
The presentations in the afternoon gave a striking insight into practice.
RESULT:
A round about successful user’s forum which everybody enjoyed and is to be continued soon.
